15 years ago the Whisper from the Heart Poetry Club launched their first
national competition, inviting schools throughout South Africa and Namibia
to submit pupils’ poems and short stories to be published in an annual
selection of work.

For the past 7 years, Caledon has produced prize-winning entries, competing
against some of the major schools in Cape Town and beyond. The most recent
winner is Meagen Krige (grade 8 in 2019) whose book Bush Holiday described her
experiences at various game lodges. This book was dedicated to her
grandparents who have encouraged her love for the bush.

For the competition, Meagen chose some highlights from her book, and
re-wrote these in diary form. She won second prize, and a copy of the book
of verse and short stories.
